It's a horse a piece

This page is intended to be a place I can share, rant and rave about anything I wish. However, it'll probably end up being about moving to a new country, being a mom, and whatever else gets my attention. Geez. By-the-by, should you wish to contact me, do so at alizarai at gmail dot com.

So, I've been a little busy...

To explain my lack of posting would be silly, right? I mean, it's probably the most obvious thing ever. Not to mention email, I have so little time for either- and I do miss it.

I'm sitting at my kitchen table enjoying the peace, all the babies are asleep at 9:30 in the morning. It is bliss. But I think maybe I should be sleeping too. A kind of anxiety comes over me, how best can I use the little time I have to myself? I'd like to go out for a walk with Sacha (my dog), but that can't be done. Babies can't be left alone, sleeping or not. I've been trying to get my desk organized so I can work on some artwork and projects like the babies memory books and photography. Maybe I should do that? I've still got one more shelf to hang over the desk. But that would require the drill and would probably wake Mr. M. Maybe I should blog (I am)- I've had so many posts floating around my head that haven't made it online. About the colic, oh my freakin' gawd the colic it has just been awful. The twins are nine weeks old now and just in the past two days or so it does seem to be getting a little better.

Or maybe I should do yoga? I practiced yesterday, that was so nice, just to move and stretch again. The funny thing is, I am by no means in shape again, but I actually feel better about my body than I ever did before I had children. Which is odd because my stomach was completely free of stretch marks then, and I was actually in pretty good shape for several years before from practicing and teaching yoga. But I was always so self-conscious of my belly, it was never perfectly flat the way I thought it was supposed to be. I admit, I fell prey to the media.

Anyway, like I said I feel pretty good about my body and I think it's because I have now nurtured three children with it, carried them through pregnancy and fed them with breastmilk. Wait- I feel great about my body! The twins have gained weight like gangbusters (does that make sense). In nine weeks they've gone from 2.6 kilos to 5 kilos, nearly doubling their weight. The graphs at the helsestasjon don't have curves, instead there're nearly vertical lines on them. Except for a bottle of formula each, every other day at most for the past few weeks, that weight gain is entirely due to breastfeeding. So, I'm proud of that, I'm proud that this is what I'm physically capable of- not just sustaining them but nurturing their growth during pregnancy and afterward. I breastfed my son throughout the entire twin pregnancy and still do once or twice a day. I've found he's still quite interested in it and gets a little jealous if he sees the girls feeding and he doesn't get to. It's still the best remedy if he's fallen or bumped his head now that he's close to walking and climbing on everything. Anyway, it's ironic I think, that I can appreciate my body and feel good about it much more now than when I was say 18 or 20.

Welcome...

For various reasons I'm migrating my blog here. Let's just say a certain family member took it upon herself to evaluate our abilities as parents and verbally attack me. Four weeks after having the twins. Nobody has the right to do that. The only person whose opinion of my parenting truly matters to me is my husband. This is why I have a new address which will not be given out to everyone. After all, I need to have a place I can be open about what's really on my mind.

If you've been a reader before, thank you! I hope to post here more frequently than I have been on the other blog.

*I* am a slacker

Yah, I know it's been almost a month since my last (first) post.

Ok, so I'm two weeks from my due date. I keep waiting for one of those inevitable signs that I'm in labor to rear it's ugly head- ie the loss of my mucus plug or oooo, diarrhea and cramps. So last night my husband gets into bed listening to his iPod, meanwhile I'm reading Daughter of Fortune by Isabelle Allende (which I totally recommend). I finally got up and shut off the lights, crawled back into bed and moved a little closer to the hubby because I was cold. Now, this is unusual. With the pregnancy I've usually been hot, at the very least warmer than everyone else and so have not minded too much my first Norwegian winter. I mean, cotton has been enough to keep me warm- except for the feet on which only wool or some other warm & fuzzy substance will do. Anyway, I slid a little closer to him for warmth and suddenly, after some seriously heavy breathing, there erupts a tirade about how he doesn't have enough room and if I don't move over he's going to take my body pillow and throw it out of the bed. Excuse me. I was just trying to steal a little heat. So, I did. I moved over. You must realize, the body pillow is the only thing that makes me moderately comfortable at night and relieves my hip pain enough for me to fall asleep. Also, I can only sleep on my side (not news to any of you who've been pregnant) which I detest, and of course, takes up more room. I am a starfish and have slept on my back for as long as I can remember, or at least since my second grade teacher told us that sleeping on your back was the healthiest and also the most effective form of beauty rest. Which just confirmed for me that sleeping on your back was the way to go. All this is just a way for me to say Dang! I mean, if there's a time in my life where I should be able to take up as much friggin' room in bed as I wish, shouldn't it be right now? Seriously. Two weeks from my due date, I have insomnia half the time, I roll from one side to the other every few hours to give one hip a break while the other gets sore, and two nights ago when I made it through one night without having to get up and pee I felt like I'd won something- (where's my gold medal). Then this morning, his alarm goes off, he gets up and goes downstairs to use the bathroom, returns and flops into bed shoving the pillow over into my belly again! I said to him, "Do you have to be such a bunghole? Could you be a little more gentle, I mean is it such a big deal? If it is, go find somewhere else to sleep!" He was like, "I can be gentle." I said "Yeah, right" and laid there fuming for a few minutes while he went back to sleep. Guess who's still in bed an hour and fifteen minutes later. Not me.

Pregnancy: a List

What I love:
  • watching the baby do gymnastics inside my tummy
  • feeling the baby move, like, all the friggin' time
  • knowing that very soon, we two will be three (rather four- mama, papa and two dogs- will be five)

What I am not so thrilled with:
  • my stomach, from my belly button to my nether regions, looking like a cat sharpened its claws on me
  • six months of "morning" sickness
  • to be replaced by three months of heartburn ( you mean you didn't want to see that pizza again when you bent over the sink to spit out your toothpaste?)
  • managing to sleep four or five hours a night, tops, before waking up to cramps in my hips that feel like my femurs are dislocated from my pelvis (wldn't it be funny if it said it felt like my lemurs were being dislocated? just a thought)
  • not being able to get back to sleep
  • being hungry every other minute, but not finding food appetizing- unless a diet consisting of croissants and chunky ice cream shakes counts?
